In Memphis There Are Horses
In Memphis, there are horses with
entire weedy blocks to themselves,
secondhand dominions of overgrown
timothy grass and Queen Anne’s lace,
bordered by rusted fevers of chain-link
between clamorous rail-switches and
the abandoned brick factories. Their
years are hemmed in by dead sockets
of antebellum windows, hemorrhaged
halos of glass beneath blind streetlights.
These thin few seem content to twitch
their dark tails beneath leaden skies,
their coats dusty, watching the nothing
but careful to only take so much of it in,
topography of void, the weary kingdom
within the tires and sprung bedsprings.
They know near nothing of running free,
or they’ve forgotten the grace of wind itself,
and to touch them now is to take in hand
a withering, the sighing of absent gesture,
curious rambles before the world was new.
